RECAP: The Uncanny Counter 2, Episode 4

I knew it. Poor Mr. Ma.

Hwang Pil-Gwang is going to use Mr. Ma to get the crew. I figured I start with that.

The battle in the museum ends with a dramatic showdown between Pil-Gwang and Mun, with Pil-Gwang realizing that Mun is a pinch stronger, intensifying his desire to kill Mun and take his power. Everyone makes it out except for Wong. He is properly exorcised, which I knew needed to happen. In episode 2, I said to myself they need to pick off the other two one by one to reduce Pil-Gwang’s reach.

Gelly loses an eye thanks to Han-Na, who finally decides to heed what Mun is saying. Listen and don’t look. They move too fast; you will lose if you try to follow with your eyes.

There is a light dance break because we, the viewers, are overwhelmed, especially after losing Mr. Ma to evil.

And the most hilarious part is Jeok-Bong quits. While battling Gelly, Jeok-Bong understandably shuts down. Like any overwhelmed business, Jeok-Bong was hired with no proper onboarding. He is unprepared for this world of fighting evil, and on his first real go, he has to battle an evil spirit that is not even on the scale. He goes back home, but at home, he discovers himself once again and returns to the crew who realize now that they missed him. For his spirit partner, Jong-Guk, he realizes it is best not to stand on the sidelines.

There is a scene between Mun and Wi-Gen, where Mun has a heart-to-heart. She, too, sometimes frustrates me. Mun tells Wi-Gen that he doesn’t know much but what he does know is that Pil-Gwang is strong and is after his powers.

Mr. Ma attends his hearing. The crew thinks everything will go well. He has great character references, Jung-Mul hired the best attorney, and everyone will find sympathy for him. Mo-Tak, Han-Na, and Mun go to the courthouse feeling strongly that the best outcome will take place, that is until Mr. Ma is asked to address the court about his actions. Mr. Ma looks out and tells everyone with a face dead straight serious that he regrets not killing Seong-Uk and if he had the opportunity to do it again he would make sure he was successful.

Everyone is shocked and no one realizes what the heck has happened except for two people. Mun sees the evil spirit in him and Pil-Gwang.

Pil-Gwang? Yes. The now Evil Duo has figured out that the woman they killed in the elevator is related to Mr. Ma, and Mr. Ma is connected to the Counters. How serendipitous for them. They go to the court to see how they can use Mr. Ma or simply cross paths with the Counters again but Pil-Gwang quickly realizes that Mr. Ma has been taken over by an evil spirit. Using him is going to be even more satisfying and easier than Pil-Gwang had ever hoped.

Episode four was a resting episode, a bridge if you will to the action. I predict that Mr. Ma will die at the end of the season, but I believe he will find a way to use the evil spirit to help the Counters take down Pil-Gwang. Especially, when he realizes that Pil-Gwang was responsible for his wife’s death. If Mr. Ma doesn’t die, I think he will replace Mo-Tak in the group. His brush with evil will help the crew deal with the new threats that are indeed on the horizon.

Well, that is it. I look forward to watching episodes five and six this weekend and sharing my thoughts with you next week.
